In 1947, my grandparents ran a small hospital at a rural seaside town. Folks had illnesses such as leprosy and dysentary. They were available for emergencies with a knock on the door at any hour. They performed surgeries, delivered babies, cared for newborns and elderly. They knew personally all folks in town and they were supported by the community in hard times.
That is a different time.
Ask any health professional today, they will tell you that doctors and nurses and even you, the patients, have been commoditized. We have all been optimized not for quality of care and patient wellness, but rather for the financial bottom line. As such, 5 minute appointments, convoluted phone trees, and surprise & exorbitant bills are the norm.
Increasingly, many physicians want to bring back those traditional values of mutual trust, respect, and support.
Interstitium is my effort to couple modern medicine with traditional values.
